Anthony Elanga fails to seize surprise Manchester United chance

Anthony Elanga was a surprise starter for Manchester United against West Ham at Old Trafford.

This was Elanga’s first start since United’s home defeat to Real Sociedad six weeks ago.

It came after he was overlooked entirely on Thursday night against Sheriff Tiraspol, with his prospects looking bleak. So amid his shock start against the Hammers – he really had to seize the opportunity.

Unfortunately for Elanga, he produced a disappointing performance and did himself few favours.

Elanga fails to seize chance

Elanga was substituted on 60 minutes, replaced by Scott McTominay as Erik ten Hag made a tactical adjustment.

His underwhelming display made him an easy choice to replace, struggling to get into the game, particularly early in the second half.

Elanga managed only 20 touches, and completed only nine passes. He had two shots at goal, both of which missed the target.

The first was a weak effort which trickled wide, and the second was a wild swing which almost went off for a throw-in.

Alejandro Garnacho really impressed on Thursday night, and this should have sparked a positive reaction from Elanga. We didn’t see it against West Ham.

Back in January’s 1-0 win over the Hammers, Elanga had the Old Trafford crowd signing his name. He gave little reason to do so on Sunday.

He may only have been in the side due to the injury which kept Antony out of the line-up. With the Brazilian expected to make a swift return, and Jadon Sancho and Garnacho waiting in the wings, Elanga really needed to make his mark.

His inability to do so could be costly to his hopes of further game time this season.
