Ange Postecoglou offers Manchester United advice, there’s mutual respect with Ruben Amorim

Similar to Ruben Amorim, Ange Postecoglou is currently under intense pressure.

Tottenham host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday in what will be a bottom half of the table clash, with both teams underperforming this season.

That is unprecedented for both teams, who usually aim to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four. Unfortunately, those objectives have been put aside this term United sitting 13^th, one place ahead of Tottenham.

The two teams have already shared an entertaining contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season as Spurs edged a dramatic 4-3 encounter to knock United out of the Carabao Cup in the quarter-finals.

However, there is eagerness from both sides to set the record straight in the league by showing some consistency for the remainder of the campaign.

Ruben Amorim is also trying to implement his preferred style of play on a squad he inherited from Erik ten Hag in November. It will take time, but United can’t afford many more defeats if they want to salvage this season.

Ange Postecoglou backs Ruben Amorim at Manchester United

As is the case with Amorim, the press is hounding Postecoglou with questions about what the future will look like at Tottenham.

Postecoglou revealed that he’s got “respect” for all managers and that he believes United will be in a better position after they give Amorim two years to change his team.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday evening, Postecoglou said: “I’ve got respect for all managers because I know how tough it is.

“I’m sure if you asked Ruben that he would say he was just doing what he was brought in to do. Obviously, they’ve scouted him, they’ve identified him, the way he plays, the way he goes about his business.

“You don’t just make these appointments because you like the look of someone. You do actually a lot of work and you bring him in with a purpose.

“Now, if anyone believes that anything can change signigicantly in a short space of time, they’re living in an alternative universe that is not based on reality.

“I’m sure – who am I to advise anybody – but if Man United stuck with Ruben for the next two years, they’d see progress, absolutely, because that’s how long it takes.

“And if someone can show me somebody who has done it quicker without significant investment, by all means put it across my desk and I’ll follow that blueprint. But we know there’s a blueprint there.

“I’m sure irrespective of the noise — I’ve only literally spoken to Rúben for probably 30 seconds at a game — I’m sure he’s there going: ‘I’m going to do what I was brought into do’ and that’s what he should do.”

Mutual respect between Amorim and Postecoglou

Although they’ve only had 30 seconds or so to chat from a previous meeting, it’s good to see mutual respect between Amorim and Postecoglou ahead of the game.

Postecoglou has told United to back Amorim for at least two years, while the United head coach offered kind words for his opponent, making a connection to the pressure they are both under in their jobs.

Amorim revealed he is a big fan of Postecoglou at his press conference, saying: “I am a huge fan of Ange Postecoglou. He is a good guy, a very good coach.

“I understand the connection with me and Ange. We have the same problem. In my opinion, and with respect, I am at a bigger club, with bigger pressure, and I think coaches must follow their principles.”

Any mutual respect is expected to go out the window for 90 minutes on Sunday when their two teams go head-to-head for a second time.

This time United will be looking for the positive result after losing twice to Tottenham this season.
