Andy Cole tells Rio Ferdinand about ‘craziness’ he saw from one iconic Premier League striker, Man Utd legend was in awe

Andy Cole revealed to fellow Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand that he would “sit and watch” one ex-Premier League star who blew him away with his ability.

The 53-year-old Manchester United legend is widely regarded as one of the best Premier League strikers of all time and had a sensational spell at Old Trafford.

Signed from Newcastle in 1995 in a deal worth £7m, Andy Cole became a key first-team United player under legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Cole netted an impressive 121 times in 275 appearances for the Red Devils and the former United and England striker was a ruthless finisher in his prime.

Another defining moment in Cole’s career at Old Trafford came in 1998 after Ferguson signed former United striker Dwight Yorke from Aston Villa.

Cole linked up superbly well with Dwight Yorke and the two United legends would become an iconic striker partnership for former Red Devils boss Ferguson.

Both Yorke and Cole would play a key role for Ferguson’s men in United’s iconic continental treble-winning team, which the club pulled off in the 1998-99 campaign.

Andy Cole makes ‘best finishers’ claim to Rio Ferdinand

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, ex-Manchester United striker Andy Cole waxed lyrical about the impact that Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler had on him.

Cole crossed paths with Robbie Fowler during his club playing career and the United legend also linked up with the former Liverpool striker at international level.

Fowler had a remarkable spell at Anfield and the former England international scored an impressive 183 times in 369 appearances for the Reds.

Cole insisted that he saw the 49-year-old former Liverpool star “do some craziness” with England and he was “one of the best finishers” he had ever seen on the pitch.

“I’m [being] honest. I’ve seen Robbie, obviously, then I’ve played with him, I’ve seen Robbie [when] we used to go away with England do some craziness,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“When you’re away with England, you go away and watch people. I’m saying because left or right foot, head, brave… I used to sit and watch him.

“His left foot was a wand as well. Robbie was one of the best finishers I’ve seen – [an] English finisher.”

What Cole saw from Robbie Fowler is backed up by Gary Neville

Cole’s assessment of Fowler’s remarkable finishing ability was backed up by United legend Gary Neville, who also played alongside the Liverpool hero for England.

During a video on The Overlap in January, Gary Neville insisted that Fowler would have been England’s best-ever goalscorer if his career had played out differently.

Speaking to Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher, he said: “Can I make a controversial statement? Might not even be controversial.

“Robbie Fowler could have been England’s greatest ever goalscorer if he hadn’t of grown up in that Liverpool team.”

Fowler competed against a roster of star-studded striking talent in the England team in the 1990s and the former Liverpool star was only capped 26 times for his country.

The former Manchester City and Leeds United player only netted seven times for the Three Lions and made only one appearance for England at a World Cup tournament.
