Andre Onana could face axe for Newcastle clash, Lyon nightmare potentially costly for Man Utd goalkeeper

Ruben Amorim has a major decision to make over Andre Onana when Manchester United travel to Newcastle this weekend.

Manchester United drew 2-2 against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie, with the second leg scheduled to take place at Old Trafford next week.

It’s all to play for after an entertaining contest in Lyon, but Ruben Amorim was disappointed United didn’t come away with a win. The Reds lacked firepower in attack and conceded two goals most United fans would deem avoidable if it wasn’t for individual error.

Lyon’s first goal came when Thiago Almada’s free-kick evaded everyone in the box, including Andre Onana, which was the Cameroonian’s first howler of the night.

United fought back as Leny Yoro turned in a superb header from close range on the brink of half-time.

It looked like United sealed the win when Joshua Zirkzee made it 2-1 in the 88^th minute, but minutes later Onana was at fault again as Rayan Cherki equalised in stoppage-time.

The mistakes made by Andre Onana on Thursday night raised further questions about the error-prone Manchester United goalkeeper.

Onana was slammed by United fans just days after Nemanja Matic claimed he is the ‘worst’ goalkeeper in the club’s history.

So, it would be fair to say it hasn’t been the best week for the Cameroon international.

To make matters worse, the Daily Mail reports that Amorim is set to make a number of changes when United travel to Tyneside and could play Altay Bayindir in goal.

Amorim defended Onana after the match but Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Mike Phelan believes Amorim’s hand may be forced.

United are currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, while Newcastle are pushing for a Champions League spot.

When did Altay Bayindir last play for Manchester United?

Bayindir, 26, has made six appearances for United this season.

All of those games came in the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup since the Turkey international has yet to get a taste of Premier League action since arriving at Old Trafford.

Bayindir made his last appearance at the end of January when United won 2-0 against FCSB in the Europa League.

The 26-year-old will be eager to get the nod over Onana this weekend.
