Andre Onana calls Trabzonspor spell ‘amazing’ as Man Utd loanee finds happiness again

Andre Onana explains why he is enjoying himself so much at Trabzonspor following a loan move from Manchester United.

After spending two years as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana fell down the pecking order at the beginning of the season.

Onana lost his place in Ruben Amorim’s line-up after a string of poor performances last term, but it didn’t help when he missed pre-season with a hamstring injury he picked up during the summer.

Altay Bayindir started Premier League matches ahead of Onana before Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp. That transfer opened the door for the Cameroon stopper to leave Old Trafford, albeit temporarily.

As a regular in the Trabzonspor team this season, Onana is trying to turn his career around, but it didn’t help that he was dropped from the Cameroon national team for the AFCON.

Andre Onana happy at Trabzonspor despite AFCON snub

Onana remains a risk-taker at Trabzonspor, but as a player, he is facing less pressure than he did at United.

The United loanee has given an interview to stress his happiness at Trabzonspor, although he doesn’t go as far as to commit his future to the Turkish club.

“I’m very happy, trust me,” Onana told Yeniasir. “I’m living the best period of my life. I can’t complain, I’m very happy to be here.

“Sometimes I’m driving and a car cuts in front of me. ‘Onana, stop, I want a photo.’ I think to myself, ‘Yes, but we can do this in another way.’ But when they see me, they’re happy, and so am I. It was difficult at first, but now I understand.

“They are my men, I love them, and I love this feeling. Because they are very passionate. It’s a wonderful thing. It’s something you can’t describe if you’re not here. But the time I’ve spent here has been perfect for me. I’m happy to be here. It’s a different lifestyle, but it’s great. Truly incredible, amazing.”

Onana has the second half of the season to prove himself to other potential suitors.

It remains to be seen whether Onana can return to playing for a bigger club competing in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, at United, Amorim will be pleased with Lammens’ performances. That is why it’s unlikely that Onana will be brought back into the squad even after his loan deal expires.

Andre Onana earns new nickname at Trabzonspor

Onana has gone from being heavily criticised at Old Trafford for costly mistakes and losing his starting spot to Bayindir and Lammens, but he’s deemed a fans’ favourite at Trabzonspor.

The fans have embraced him passionately by crowning him “The Wall”, which embodies hard work, redemption, and character.

It didn’t work out for Onana in England, but United will be eager to cash in next summer.
