Andre Onana has now set the record straight over the stinging criticism that he received after Manchester United’s Premier League match against Manchester City.

Manchester United were in Premier League action on the weekend and the Red Devils played their final Manchester derby in the 2024-25 campaign.

City arrived at Old Trafford to face United and the defending Premier League champions secured a point from the lacklustre Manchester derby clash.

United and City competed in a forgettable Premier League contest and both sides failed to capitalise on their respective chances in the 90 minutes of the match.

The Red Devils are 13th in the Premier League table after the 0-0 draw, while City are in sixth place and Pep Guardiola’s men are one point adrift from the top four.

Andre Onana kept a clean sheet for United during the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils No 1 has now defended himself on another matter.

Andre Onana sends a clear-cut message to Man Utd fans after the 0-0 Premier League draw vs Manchester City at Old Trafford

Manchester United fans at Old Trafford could be heard venting their frustration over how long Andre Onana spent on the ball during the Manchester City match.

Gary Neville was also deeply critical of Onana and the Sky Sports pundit ruthlessly slammed the “boring” performances of United and City on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after the match, Onana insisted that he needs to take time on the ball when he feels his United teammates “need to rest” during the match.

However, the 29-year-old former Ajax and Inter Milan star added that he can also increase the tempo when he feels it is needed in a United match.

“To be honest, it doesn’t affect me because the decision I make is to help the team,” Onana said, as per TNT Sports.

“Sometimes I will make the right decision, sometimes I will make the wrong decision.

“When I feel my players need to rest, I have to take my time; when I feel we need to speed up the game, I will do it.

“But sometimes, especially in the second half with an opponent that has a lot of control, they have more possession than us, I have to let my guys breathe.

“They need me to do that. If the team needs to speed up the game, I will do it. I try to make the best decision for the team.”

Ruben Amorim switches his attention to Man Utd’s Europa League quarter-final clash vs Lyon in France

Speaking after United and City’s lacklustre 0-0 draw, Ruben Amorim insisted that the Europa League campaign in the 2024-25 season is “really important” for his side.

“It’s really important,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“Again, it’s not the most important thing for Manchester United because we have a lot of things to do, but you can see it, in this season, the Europa League is really important.

“We can reach the Champions League next season, we can win something, so we are going to do everything to try to go to the next stage.”

Lyon will host United at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday evening for their first-leg Europa League quarter-final clash, with kick-off planned for 8pm UK time.
