Ander Herrera has long been a fan favourite at Manchester United. However, this season he has struggled for opportunities, with injuries playing their part.
The Spaniard started for United against Derby County on Tuesday evening and, while he was on the losing side, he was one of the few shining lights.
Herrera made headlines earlier this season when he started at centre-back against Tottenham Hotspur.
We do not need reminding that it was a terrible decision, with United losing 3-0. But that was not Herrera’s fault.
He is a midfielder who often performs best when tasked with an attacking role; something United fans have rarely seen in recent years.
Herrera has an eye for goal that is rarely utilised by United and Jose Mourinho should seriously consider him as an alternative to Paul Pogba or an option from the bench late on.
The Frenchman may have scored four goals this season but three have come from the penalty spot, and he is not the only midfielder with a point to prove.
Herrera showed against Derby that he is effective when spearheading a midfield three and, if Pogba is in the manager’s bad books, there would be no harm playing the Spaniard alongside Fred and Nemanja Matic in the league.
He should also be called on more from the bench, given his knack of scoring long-range efforts.
United need drive and passion and Herrera has those in abundance. He can also quickly add to his 17 goals and 24 assists for the Red Devils if given a chance.
At 29, Herrera still has plenty to offer, and his attitude is right, which is vital for United right now.
