Noussair Mazraoui’s World Cup run comes to an end following a defeat to France in the quarter-finals.

Five Manchester United players reached the quarter-final phase of the 2026 World Cup, including Noussair Mazraoui.

The Moroccan defender’s tournament came to an end tonight as France won 2-0, thanks to stunning second-half strikes from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

France will play the winner of Spain vs Belgium in the semi-finals next Tuesday.

Noussair Mazraoui concedes penalty in France defeat

Mazraoui played at left-back for Morocco since the beginning of the tournament, but he moved to centre-back for their quarter-final tie against France.

Morocco showed little initiative to get forward and sat back against a France side that was awarded a penalty in the 25th minute when Mazraoui was penalised for a foul on Kylian Mbappe inside the box.

Luckily for Morocco and Mazraoui, Yassine Bono saved the spot-kick to keep the scoreline level.

Other than Mazraoui’s mistimed lunge on Mbappe in the first half, the United defender was a solid presence in the Moroccan defence.

However, Morocco lost their grip on the match when Mbappe redeemed himself in the 60th minute.

France were two goals ahead six minutes later as Ousmane Dembele got his name on the scoresheet.

After playing the entire match, Mazraoui recorded a 98% pass success rate after completing 51 of his 52 attempted passes.

Mazraoui also touched the ball 60 times and made two passes into the final third from defence. He also made one crucial block on top of four clearances.

The result means United can now plan Mazraoui’s return for pre-season once he enjoys some time off to recharge his batteries.

Still, the 28-year-old will be disappointed that his World Cup campaign has come to a crushing end, albeit against one of the tournament favourites.
