An absolute menace: Wout Weghorst shows you really have to watch him play

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst probably won’t get the credit he deserves.

Just one goal in 13 games makes for dismal reading. That’s why you actually need to watch games.

Weghorst played a key role in all three of Manchester United’s goals.

Let’s go through them…

Weghorst key to United

Manchester United do need a more clinical striker. Long-term. Right now he is the best, and actually the only option the team have, and he is making it work.

The team did need a bit of luck with Naif Aguerd heading into his own net, but this was fortune which Wout Weghorst created by putting him under pressure as he competed for the header.

The Dutch forward’s work rate is incredible, playing twice a week every week, he never gives up. If his morale is dented by a lack of goals, he doesn’t show it.

Weghorst is shaking off any self-doubt he has, powering through it, putting the teams’ needs first. He helped United get back into the game.

If he was a static striker, waiting around for chances, Manchester United would likely have lost that game last night. They had to work hard to break West Ham down, and eventually got the reward.

Weghorst provided the assist for Marcus Rashford’s goal at Wembley, and he is really making his presence felt. In the win over West Ham, he created five goalscoring chances, more than any player on the pitch.

He is absolute menace, who you actually have to watch to appreciate.

If you just look at the goals column, you won’t see what Weghorst brings to the side. Some of the national media pundits appear to be doing that when they criticise him. They clearly are not watching.

The goals will come. They have to. But not many strikers can leave a pitch saying they played a key role in three goals in a single match when they don’t score. Weghorst did that last night, and that’s the next best thing.
