The 19-year-old is yet to make his Manchester United senior debut but he trained with the first team side on several occasions last season.

He was named the winner of Manchester United’s Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year award for 2021/22.

From 32 games for United’s academy sides last season, the Spain Under-19 international produced four goals and six assists.

With Tyrell Malacia being brought in from Feyenoord and Brandon Williams returning from a season-long loan at Norwich City, the competition for minutes at left-back has only intensified with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles already in situ.

Fernandez would benefit from getting regular action at senior level and competing in the Championship, which is one of the most physical leagues in the world, week in, week out would only benefit his development.

The Spaniard shared a story on his Instagram profile of him being at Deepdale to watch Ryan Lowe’s side lose 2-1 to the Foxes.

Speaking after the game to the Lancashire Evening Post, Lowe confirmed that the club were hopeful of signing the young United starlet.

Lowe said: “We’ve tracked Alvaro Fernandez for some time and he was here with his family today watching us play – hopefully we’ve been good enough and he’s been impressed enough for him to say yeah, he’d like to join us.

“Until that we can’t say much about it, he wanted to come and see it, hopefully we can have some news over the next few days.

“When you come to the stadium, I was speaking to him on the pitch, and you show him the facilities – who wouldn’t want to play here?

“We’ve got to make sure it’s right for him and us, and if it’s right then we’ll do it. He wanted to come and see us and how we play and how we go about our business.

“Hopefully we can get something sorted. I’m not sure about other interest, it’s just about what we do. Ultimately it’s a case of hopefully he like us and we like him.”
