Alex Telles nominated to win Champions League award

Alex Telles has been nominated to win a Champions League award.

What? How? Have UEFA lost their minds? No, this is not a best player award, nor a best XI of the tournament.

Instead, Telles has been put forward for the Champions League goal of the season award, and on reflection, he is a very worthy nominee.

Telles’ equalising goal at Old Trafford against Villarreal back in September was a beautiful strike, a creative set piece routine from Manchester United, with Bruno Fernandes chipping the ball out to him, for the Brazilian to volley from outside the box into the bottom corner.

The goal was Alex Telles’ first Manchester United goal, and it remains his only one. It is just as well it was a memorable strike then.

Speaking earlier in the season to United’s club website, Telles credited teammate Bruno Fernandes for his role, before reflecting fondly on the moment.

He said: “It was a remarkable evening, an unforgettable evening. I share the merit of that goal with Bruno because that pass was his idea.

“Obviously because of my hard work, confidence and skill that I know I have I was able to score that goal. I will never forget that moment. The main thing is making the fans happy, I will never forget how happy they were in the stadium that night.”

The goal came in Manchester United’s first Champions League home game in front of fans since 2019, and helped inspire a 2-1 comeback.

It was hoped this could be a turning point for Telles, but it didn’t really materialise, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sticking him straight back on the bench in the following Premier League game against Everton, when Luke Shaw returned – and made a goal costing error.

Telles did get his chances in the second half of the season under Ralf Rangnick, and by the end of the campaign, fans were left feeling like they had seen enough.

There is a chance Telles is sold this summer, with Portuguese newspaper Correia da Manha reporting Porto are interested in bringing him back.

Telles’ rivals for the Champions League award include a Vinicius Jr strike for Real Madrid against Shakhar, an Asensio goal for Real versus Inter, a Karim Benzema goal against Chelsea, a Robert Lewandowski goal against Dynamo Kiev, Lionel Messi against City, and Kylian Mbappe against Real Madrid, among a handful of others.

The Manchester United defender is in esteemed company, and the quality of his goal puts him in with a good shout of winning.
