Manchester United have had some stunning midfielders in years gone by.

The likes of Bryan Robson, Paul Scholes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Roy Keane and so many more have all gone on to become legendary figures at the club.

Any manager would be lucky to have any of these names in their first-team squad. But what’s better than one midfielder? Why two – of course.

United have also been blessed with some tremendous partnerships over the years. In fact, many believe they had the best midfield partnership in Premier League history.

Manchester United have the best Premier League midfield partnership in history

Speaking on the Match Of The Day Top 10’s, Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker all agreed the Manchester United duo of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes is the best midfield partnership in Premier League history.

Micah Richards gave his verdict: “12 seasons together, six titles, three FA Cups… I mean what more do you want?”

“They are the perfect partnership”, said Shearer. Gary Lineker also shared the same thoughts as his colleagues.

We’d also be inclined to agree. They complimented each other perfectly and were two world-class footballers.

They did have to fend off some competition though, with some fabulous partnerships having formed in the English top flight over the years.

Top 10 midfield partnerships in Premier League history

For the first time ever on the MOTD top 10 series, Richards and Shearer were in complete agreement for their top ten, order and all. This was as follows:

  1. Paul Scholes and Roy Keane – Manchester United
  2. Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho – Manchester City
  3. Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan – Manchester City
  4. Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick – Manchester United
  5. Frank Lampard and Michael Essien – Chelsea
  6. Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva – Arsenal
  7. Yaya Toure and Fernandinho – Manchester City
  8. Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
  9. Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit – Arsenal
  10. Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante – Leicester City

Scholes was that good… he featured twice! Michael Carrick was an immense player, however, you simply can’t beat Keane and Scholes.

They’re the best midfield partnership in Premier League history in our eyes and the MOTD panels.
