‘A handful’ – Matthijs de Ligt warns Premier League rivals about new Man Utd signing

Manchester United’s summer signings are settling in and making an impression on their new teammates.

Although Manchester United have started the season slowly, taking one point from their first two Premier League matches, there is optimism that the new signings will eventually help deliver better results on the pitch.

Ruben Amorim has welcomed four new players to his United first-team squad this summer, with less than a week remaining until the transfer window shuts.

The first player to arrive was Matheus Cunha from Wolves. He was later joined by Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Three of the four signings thus far are attacking players, but United have managed just one goal in their first two games. It went down as an own goal after a header from Leny Yoro took a deflection off Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz.

United fans will hope that the new attacking signings won’t take too long to open their goalscoring accounts with the club, with a Carabao Cup round two tie to play on Wednesday night.

The next Premier League match will see Burnley travel to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Matthijs de Ligt impressed by Benjamin Sesko

One of United’s priorities this summer was to sign a new striker.

Rasmus Hojlund, who is being linked with a move to Napoli, struggled to provide goals as he spearheaded United’s attack over the past two seasons.

Sesko arrives from RB Leipzig to address United’s problems in front of goal. United fans hope that the Slovenian centre-forward will be helped by Cunha and Mbeumo, although they’ve all yet to score their first goal for the club.

Speaking about United’s new striker, Matthijs de Ligt heaped praise on Sesko after training with him for the past two weeks.

The Netherlands international has warned fellow Premier League defenders that Sesko is a ‘handful’ to deal with.

“I think in England you call this ‘a handful’, like he’s a difficult striker to play against,” De Ligt told ManUtd.com.

“He’s quick, he’s strong in the air, he’s always on the right spot in front of the goal, so I think he can be a really important player for us to help us score more goals, and yeah, I’m happy that he’s here.”

Harry Maguire echoes Sesko praise

Fellow United defender Harry Maguire backed up De Ligt’s comments on Sesko.

Interestingly, two of United’s centre-backs commented on the physical presence that Sesko comes with.

“He’s a unit for his age,” Maguire said about Sesko.

“I’m sure he’s going to cause a lot of defenders problems. He’s still young, but he’s got all the attributes to contribute to the team and to contribute to this club for many years to come, so we’ll give him our full backing and, fingers crossed, he scores many goals for us.”
