20-year-old lands international call-up after Manchester United exit

Manchester United sold Charlie Savage over the summer and he continues to make strides forward having secured a first Wales call-up.

United became ruthless when it came to young players over the summer transfer window.

Those seemingly not seen as being in contention for a first-team impact were allowed to leave the club, with some deals containing buy-back clauses.

We saw goalkeepers Nathan Bishop and Matej Kovar leave the club whilst Zidane Iqbal, Bjorn Hardley, Noam Emeran, Marc Jurado and Teden Mengi all moved on.

All those leaving United are hoping for first-team exposure elsewhere – just like Charlie Savage with his move to Reading.

United allowed Savage to leave over the summer in a deal with the future in mind.

The Athletic reported that United allowed Savage to join Reading for free but with a 50% sell-on clause.

United stand to benefit from any potential sale down the line and Savage is making a strong start in Berkshire.

The 20-year-old has bagged one goal and one assist in 10 league appearances for Reading, featuring prominently in midfield under Ruben Selles.

Savage has now been so impressive for Reading that he has been handed a first callus to the Welsh senior squad.

Savage has been a regular through the age groups for Wales, featuring from the Under-17’s to the Under-21’s.

Now in contention to play against Gibraltar and Croatia, Savage could follow in the footsteps of his father Robbie by landing senior caps.

Savage already attracting interest

Savage appears to be benefiting from leaving United and playing regularly, especially with other clubs already keen.

The Mirror reported in September that Dutch sides Ajax and FC Twente are already showing an interest in Savage.

The Eredivisie clubs – ironically two of Erik ten Hag’s former clubs – are scouting Savage after a strong start to the season.

United will of course hope that Savage kicks on anyway, having been well-regarded during his time in the Old Trafford ranks.

With potential cash to come in down the line though, United have even more reason to hope that Savage continues shining with Reading and make an impact with Wales.
