David de Gea – 7
Not an awful lot to do in the first half but produced a sharp second half stop from a Ruben Neves free kick just before the hour mark before a superb trademark reflex save late on to keep Wolves out.
Kept his 176th United clean sheet to move to second on the all-time list, within four of Peter Schmiechel’s record.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
Wolves tried to create an overload down his side but he stood up to it well, after some discussions with Erik ten Hag, Antony and Bruno Fernandes.
Slowed the game down slightly too often in attack but was solid throughout a game which further strengthened the idea of an unlikely reprieve at Old Trafford.
Raphael Varane – 7
Played up against Diego Costa, who can ruffle the feathers of defenders but showed his calmness and experience and made a crucial late headed intervention to stop Raul Jimenez equalising.
Luke Shaw – 8
Shaw was again deployed out of position at centre-back, ahead of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof but performed expertly.
Commanding in the air and cool in possession as he helped United circulate the ball in possession just like Lisandro Martinez usually does.
Tyrell Malacia – 5.5
Did get some decent crosses in from the left but was also loose in possession at times and struggled sometimes physically against a rejuvenated Wolves side.
Casemiro – 7
Masterfully stopped a first-half counter attack without getting booked and could have opened the scoring early on from a corner.
Was shown a yellow card after half-time for a foul on Daniel Podence but helped United see the game out.
Christian Eriksen – 6.5
Showed his class and quality during a hectic midfield battle but struggled to really dominate proceedings in the first half.
Was replaced by Fred around the 60 minute mark as Ten Hag looked to swing proceedings United’s way.
Bruno Fernandes – 6.5
Bruno was typically busy and tried to make things happen with some smart combinations in the middle of the pitch.
A second half free-kick was untypically wayward, and he will have better, more influential games than this.
Antony – 6
Was wasteful with a first half header which he put straight at Jose Sa and struggled to turn his possession into chances created.
Anthony Martial – 5.5
Martial was too laid back in possession and it was too easy to dispossess him in the first half.
Failed to make meaningful connections with two first half crosses which should have led to shots on target at least, but went begging.
Was replaced by Donny van de Beek with a few minutes remaining as he drifted further and further out of the game as it wore on.
Alejandro Garnacho – 7
Was surprisingly removed at half-time to allow Marcus Rashford to come on.
Looked United’s most potent threat during the first half but should have opened the scoring when he pounced on a Nelson Semedo error but allowed Sa to save.
Marcus Rashford – 8
Did not do a huge amount before his goal but shifted a tight game United’s way with some smart footwork and a decisive finish.
Responded in the perfect way to being left on the bench by putting United in front and was desperately unlucky not to make it 2-0 when his goal was ruled out for handball when it would have bounced in off his body anyway.
Booked for kicking the ball away late on.
Fred – 6
Was booked just more than ten minutes after coming on and took some time to get to the pace of the game with Wolves often breaking through midfield.
Donny van de Beek – n/a
Came on with minutes remaining as United saw the game out, although he could have made more of a couple of counter attack opportunities late on.
Anthony Elanga – n/a
Replaced Antony in stoppage time.
Harry Maguire – n/a
Brought on late for his height at set-pieces.
