Manchester United travel to Anfield this weekend in a fixture that strikes fear into the heart of United fans.
The Red Devils record against Liverpool is abysmal, particularly away from Old Trafford. Last year’s result under Erik ten Hag was the worst result ever.
A 7-0 drubbing was in store for United as their first-team squad took the trip up to Merseyside. They’ll be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself this time around.
Although, if previous fixtures are anything to go off – it isn’t likely. To find the last time United won against Liverpool away from home, you’ll have to go back to 2016.

Manchester United’s last XI vs Liverpool
In January 2016, Louis van Gaal was United’s manager and searched for a second consecutive Premier League win at Anfield.
This was Jurgen Klopp’s first fixture experience, but Wayne Rooney’s goal 12 minutes from time – United’s only shot on target – earned a 1-0 win.
Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino and James Milner all started the game for Liverpool, three names who have departed over the last season – meaning their squad on the day is now almost unrecognizable as well.
Anthony Martial is now the only remaining member of the Manchester United squad at Anfield that day, with David de Gea departing in the summer.
Here is a look at the full starting XI from that day…

The last time Manchester United did Premier League double over Liverpool
United’s last Premier League double was in that same season, the 2015/16 campaign, where United came fifth and finished outside the Champions League spots on goal difference.
Liverpool finished eighth, six points back, while United ended the season as FA Cup winners but sacked Van Gaal shortly after.
Erik ten Hag is looking to start this year’s campaign against Klopp’s side with a victory, although they are severe underdogs.
The fact United have nothing to lose may work in their favour… besides, the squad they put out can’t be worse looking than the one they fielded in 2016!
