It was a night to forget for Michael Carrick and his Manchester United side, in which the result was just as disappointing as the performance.

After Manchester United were beaten by Newcastle, there are more questions for Michael Carrick to answer regarding his system and the performances.

While there is a great appetite for Carrick to succeed, the defeat had been coming for weeks, and there is concern at United as to whether the positivity was a new manager bounce, considering how dire performances have been.

However, Senne Lammens has now admitted that Carrick tried to get United to improve during the game, but the players couldn’t follow his instructions.

Senne Lammens explains what Michael Carrick told his players at half-time

After the game, Lammens expressed his frustrations over United’s performance, suggesting that there were issues with the mentality of the Red Devils.

Lammens also spoke to MUTV, in which he explained the warning Carrick gave United at half-time, including the instructions for the second half.

“I think, in the first half, we weren’t at our best, but then, heading into half-time, with a pretty good feeling after scoring that goal in the last minute. Against 10 men, we had a pretty good feeling.

“But he warned us it was not going to be easy, we had to attack them and try to break them quickly, or the longer we had to wait for that, and the longer it stays 1-1, one opportunity and it can be changed.

“Today, that’s what happened, and it’s nowhere near good enough, today, in every aspect. We have to learn from that.”

Carrick wanted his team to attack and be quicker in the game, as Lammens explains, which was one of the biggest issues with the performance against Newcastle, but the players either weren’t able or didn’t want to.

This was clear with Newcastle’s second-half starting a lot better than United; they wanted it more.

Manchester United’s defeat was coming and Michael Carrick has no excuse

Against Newcastle, Carrick’s team did him absolutely no favours, putting in a rusty and slow performance which was only ever going to result in defeat.

But the head coach cannot have any excuses, considering the past four games have all been disappointing in terms of performance, with the results previously papering over the cracks.

Carrick’s side have regressed physically in recent weeks, with his training regime considered a big factor behind the problem.

This was the case against Newcastle and their 10 men outplayed United’s 11.

Now, Carrick has 11 days to knuckle down and find a solution; otherwise, he might be out of the running pretty quickly.
