However, Ruben Amorim surprised United fans when Mount made way for the second half and was replaced by Red Devils talent Jack Fletcher at the break.

United’s influence against Newcastle waned in the second half after Mason Mount made way, with concerns emerging over a potential injury scare at the time.
Speaking after the Boxing Day match, United manager Ruben Amorim admitted that he was not prepared to roll the dice with Mount after the player “felt something.”
The 40-year-old Portuguese coach told Sky Sports: “He felt something at half-time and he wanted to go in the second half, but we cannot lose more players”

Amorim’s tactical system for United saw a surprise change on Friday evening, with the Red Devils switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the match instead of 3-4-2-1.
United trained with Amorim’s preferred formation during the warm-up at Old Trafford before pivoting in the clash in a way to catch Newcastle by surprise.
“I felt that was the only way to create more danger, to have more opportunities by playing a back four with a lot of guys inside,” Amorim said about the formation change.
United have now climbed to fifth place in the Premier League table ahead of going into their final match of 2025 against Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.
