Rangnick says Fernandes is out of United vs Spurs with illness
Bruno Fernandes is not in the Manchester United squad for this evening’s crucial clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been recalled to the side after missing the Manchester derby, but Bruno was the most notable absentee.
He was not expected to miss this clash and unsurprisingly, Ralf Rangnick was asked about the Portuguese midfielder by MUTV ahead of the game.
The German said that Fernandes is ill and missed training on Friday and that is why he has been left out of the squad entirely.
“We had a false positive test on David de Gea last night. We had a second test which was negative and a PCR which was negative and that is why we can play him after all.
“Bruno got ill unfortunately yesterday and could not train and could not play. Hopefully he is back for Tuesday but today he is out.
“We decided to play with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford and we are looking forward to a top performance from our side.
“We played a poor second half at the Etihad and it is the perfect venue, game and opponent to show a reaction and show how good we are today.”
Fernandes’ absence is a big miss, but it gives Paul Pogba more licence to go forward and influence the game as he looks for a response after the 4-1 Manchester derby loss.
Ronaldo’s return is important too, as Rangnick looks for more cutting edge in front of goal, with Sancho and Rashford on the wings.
United need to show a big result and performance in order to stay in the race for the top four in the Premier League and Rangnick will hope he can get that even without Bruno.
