Manchester United suffered a rather bizarre 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena but the overriding thought on the game was just how easy it was to get through the midfield.
The pairing of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, which looked to be promising last season, has been cut through time and time again so far this season.
Erik ten Hag’s side scored three goals in Munich and came away from the game with nothing. it was only the second time they have conceded four goals in a European away game, the last being the 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in 1994.
Paul Scholes, the iconic former United midfielder, gave his thoughts on the midfield performances and thinks that more could be done from the wingers to help.

Scholes’ verdict
Speaking on TNT Sport, Scholes believes that the wingers should have done more to help the midfield pairing but ultimately they’re getting cut through far too easily.
“Why aren’t the midfielders telling the wingers to sit in and to defend for a bit and get through these next few minutes,” Scholes said at full-time.
“(Why) can’t Eriksen and Casemiro tell the wingers to sit in and help them, they’re getting run through far too easily.
“United looked dangerous themselves but those goals conceded today were poor.”
Scholes’ words were echoed amongst the United faithful, who have observed this issue as a major problem since the first game of the season.
How do United improve
The defensive shape and the midfield pivot are certainly costing United too often this season. To score three goals at the Allianz and come away from the game with nothing, will certainly hurt the manager and the squad.
The debut of Sofyan Amrabat certainly can’t come quick enough as the midfielder seemed destined to line up alongside Casemiro in the pivot and the energy and defensive steel the midfielder brings may well be the key.
One thing is clear, the ease with which Bayern cut through United needs to be addressed, to concede two goals after seemingly getting back into the game is a disgrace and needs addressing urgently.
