Omari Forson had a far-from-dream Manchester United debut on Saturday as he struggled in a poor performance all round.
Manchester United were absolutely awful in a 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday afternoon with the scoreline being generous to the home side.
The absence of Rasmus Hojlund was sorely felt by Erik ten Hag and his side, although there can be no excuse for a display like that – despite Harry Maguire blaming the absence of Hojlund.
The game saw 19-year-old Omari Forson make his full United debut, starting on the right wing as the attack was shaken up.
But the debut didn’t go as he’d have dreamt it and Paul Merson has now explained how he feels the debut went.

Paul Merson comments on Omari Forson’s Manchester United debut
Speaking after full-time on Sky Sports, Merson explained what he saw Forson doing during his debut and admitted he felt sorry for the teenager.
“I felt for him if I’m being honest, he’s getting frustrated with himself and lost the ball a couple of times.”
Despite a far-from-impressive performance, Merson did admit the youngster could hardly be blamed with the entire team letting him down.
“But when you come into the team and make your full debut you’ve got to rely on your older players, they’ve got to play well, and he didn’t get that today as none of the players around him played well and I don’t think it helped him and I really felt sorry for him today, the older players let him down.”
Lastly, Merson did however tell the young winger that he should be proud of himself.
“But it was an experience he should be proud of himself, he’s made his debut for Manchester United at a young age so he should remember that.”
Unfair to judge Forson based on that performance
While many will have watched Forson struggle and decided he’s not going to make it at United, it’s harsh to judge him based on such a shambolic team display.
Throwing a kid into a dysfunctional situation with senior players all being atrocious was never going to paint him in a good light.
This won’t be the last we see of Forson, hopefully, next time he will be in a better situation with the team playing well for him to actually benefit from.
