Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana had a night to forget as the Red Devils threw away a win against Galatasaray.
Andre Onana has been a weak point in three out of five Champions League games this season, with more costly mistakes last night.
The goalkeeper has been much-improved in recent weeks, and has not got the credit his performances deserved. The criticism will be piling up again after last night’s performance.
Onana conceded three goals, undercutting a very impressive attacking display. Two of them were from free-kicks.
Reaction to Andre Onana errors
Manchester United were cruising at 2-0 up after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.
This time there was no player sent off, to throw away a lead, United did it all by themselves, giving away three easy goals.
The first came from a Hakim Ziyech free-kick. Onana took a gamble on the ball going to his left, and the shot went to his right.
The second was worse. He spilled the ball behind him, into the net. United went on to draw the game 3-3, and Champions League last 16 qualification looks like a long shot.
MUTV pundit Dion Dublin told Matchday Review he was unimpressed with Andre Onana’s errors.
He said: “I think he’ll be feeling responsible for those mistakes. He’ll go over it, thinking ‘why didn’t I start in the same position for the first goal? Why didn’t I try to catch it for the second?'”
“I just don’t get his decision making. I know good he is, I know how good he can be, [but] the job of a goalkeeper is to stop the ball going over the white line.
He added, on the first goal: “He’s made the wrong decision. He knows this.”
Dublin criticises game management
Andre Onana was not the only player responsible for Manchester United failing to win. At 3-2 up, the game became far too open, back and forth, with the Red Devils lacking control.
Dublin reflected on the game management being poor. He commented: “I thought we were in control and then Galatasaray took control but ultimately nobody was really in control, there was no real pattern of play. We should have had the game won at 2-0, that’s where it comes down to game management. We had a great chance to win here.”
Manchester United’s qualification chances are now out of our hands. A win against Bayern Munich in the final game is needed, and even then, other results need to go our way. A paltry tally of four points from five games shows the team have just not been good enough.
