Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri had one very important moment in the team’s pre-season win over Leeds.

Manchester United fans lauded Hannibal Mejbri’s performance in the club’s first pre-season game over Leeds, after a promising 45 minute display.

Hannibal came close to scoring, seeing a shot well saved, after Amad had created a really good chance.

While Hannibal will be disappointed he didn’t show the ruthless finishing required to score, there was a defensive moment that will have caught Erik ten Hag‘s attention far more.

Hannibal defensive qualities

Hannibal’s big moment came late in the second half when he sprinted across the pitch to shut down a Leeds counter attack and prevent a clear goalscoring chance.

His lung-busting run was described by MUTV commentator Stewart Gardner, “Hannibal with a fantastic goal-saving challenge. It’s a corner kick but really the Tunisia international has run the length of the field and he has put in a brilliantly timed goal-saving tackle.”

Co-commentator David May praised the 20-year-old’s big contribution, lauding it as “Brilliant, absolutely outstanding.”

He added: “It was a good opportunity for Leeds, without Hannibal getting back it was a simple tap-in probably, great tackle.”

Work rate will have impressed Erik ten Hag

Flicks and tricks can grab attention, as can goals and assists, but it is industrious defensive work that will stand out and win managers over.

Hannibal played with hunger throughout his 45 minutes, pressing from the front and forcing Leeds into defensive mistakes.

That made it even more impressive to see him track back with such commitment. It was a moment that stood out and showed what he can do.

It was a sign of a player who has learned from his Championship experience. That is a division where you have to work hard in every moment or you won’t get picked. Hannibal is going to be an asset next season, wherever he is playing.
