Manchester United have made it two wins in their last two Premier League games by beating Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s.

There were some impressive performances across the pitch and we have picked out four of them. The positions on the pitch they play in will give an idea of what sort of display was required…

Raphael Varane

United look so much better since Varane came back into the side at the expense of Harry Maguire.

Varane’s pace means we can push higher up the pitch but his presence and coolness is such a change from the Englishman’s recent nervousness.

He is showing his enduring quality and was unflustered throughout here, even as United invited pressure after going 1-0 up.

Lisandro Martinez

For the second game running, Lisandro won the man of the match award.

He is setting about proving the doubters wrong after a rough start to life in English football.

United kept a first clean sheet of the season, and a first shutout on the road of 2022 and that was thanks in no small part to Lisandro.

Diogo Dalot

Dalot was not flawless defensively, and there were times when he needed to show more conviction.

But he set up Bruno Fernandes’ winning goal with a great cross, which foxed the home defence when Marcus Rashford was the obvious target.

That showed why he is getting the nod over Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and he did play his part in the clean sheet with some dogged defending under the cosh.

Tyrell Malacia

Fresh from keeping Mo Salah quiet, Malacia showed that he is capable of consistency as a young defender here.

He was as committed as we have come to expect, and the left-back slot looks his to lose, with Luke Shaw an unused substitute once again here.

There were some nervy moments in possession, but he plays at 100 miles and hour and adjusted to the demands of his manager to play more narrowly to deal with Southampton’s system well.
