Manchester United returned to action tonight with a Carabao Cup fourth round match with Burnley. The starting line-up featured five players who went to the World Cup.

United won the game 2-0 with Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford on the scoresheet. Here is a look at our player ratings from the game at Old Trafford…

Martin Dubravka: Made a mess of an early corner, and looked nervous, even had a clumsy moment in stoppage time. Was lucky to start after a poor friendly display against Cadiz. – 5

Tyrell Malacia: His first game in weeks. Solid in possession and a competent defensive display. – 6

Victor Lindelof: A calming presence at the back, and helped stand-in partner Casemiro. – 7

Casemiro: Played a role as centre-back with Harry Maguire ill, and cleared up Dubravka’s early error. Surpassed expectation, blocking shots and winning headers. Stray pass late on, nearly undid his good work. – 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Assist on his first start of the season. Fantastic work to cross on the volley into Eriksen’s pass. A strong return to the side. – 7

Scott McTominay: Won a challenge which led to Rashford’s goal. Ensured United won the battle in midfield. – 7

Christian Eriksen: Scored United’s first goal. Showed his class with a clever first-half header to set an attack on it’s way. A class act as always. – 7

Bruno Fernandes: Showed his quality early with a defence splitting pass. Always looking for opportunities in the final third and his pass led to United’s opener. – 7

Marcus Rashford: Worked hard from the first minute and got his reward early in the second with a superb individual goal. Great to see him back, turning on the style. – 8

Anthony Martial: Link-up play excellent, had a shot saved late in the first half. Little impact in the second haf before being substituted. – 6

Alejandro Garnacho: Missed an early shot when through on goal and overran another opportunity. Worked hard but blew his biggest chances. – 5

Substitutes:

Antony: Nice touch to play in McTominay inside the area, but then misplaced a counter-attacking pass which should have led to a goal. Had a shot saved and was lively. – 6

Luke Shaw: Another World Cup star making his return, helped United to close out the game – 6

Anthony Elanga: Unable to make an impression in his 20 minutes on the pitch – 5

Fred: Little time to make an impact. – N/A

Brandon Williams: First competitive United game since May 2021. Came on for the final five minutes. – N/A
