Manchester United predicted line-up to face Lyon in Europa League quarter-final decider

Add as preferred source on Google

Manchester United will take on Lyon on Thursday night in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

Ruben Amorim will hope Manchester United can get a win, after two costly errors by Andre Onana meant they came away from Lyon with a 2-2 draw.

Amorim has confirmed that Onana will start against Lyon, despite dropping the Cameroon international for the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday.

The United head coach is under immense pressure to get a result, with financial rewards and Champions League football on the line. Qualifying for Europe’s biggest competition could be the difference in United signing their primary targets in the summer.

On Wednesday, United welcomed Jonny Evans back to training but the game will come too soon for the experienced centre-back.

Lyon’s Rayan Cherki will be looking to get on the scoresheet again after his late equaliser in the previous meeting. The United star was one of their star players on the night.

How Manchester United could line-up against Lyon

United will be without Joshua Zirkzee for the rest of the season after the Netherlands forward suffered an injury against Newcastle in the Premier League.

Zirkzee scored against Lyon in the first leg and his absence will come as a blow to Amorim’s preparations for the match.

United’s defence almost picks itself whereas Amorim has options to select from in midfield.

In attack, there is only one centre-forward available because Chido Obi is unavailable in the Europa League.

Without further ado, here is our predicted XI.

Goalkeeper

In goal, Andre Onana will replace Altay Bayindir in an attempt to redeem himself between the posts after a nightmare in Lyon last week. The Cameroonian needs to overcome the negative spotlight if he is to remain United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Defence

Noussair Mazraoui has provided experience in the heart of United’s defence for Amorim and is likely to be trusted again for this crucial tie. He will be joined by Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro to complete the back three. The wing-backs will be Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu, with both expected to get forward and contribute in the final third.

Midfield

Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro will start in the centre to deal with any of the battles that may unfold. Their use of the ball will be crucial against Lyon who have more technical players than United.

Attack

Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho will be the two number 10s, playing in behind Rasmus Hojlund. They will need to provide the Dane will plenty of opportunities to try get him back on the scoresheet as another goalscoring drought begins.
