Manchester United suffered an embarrassing defeat at home to Fulham on Saturday.
It was simply not Manchester United‘s or Erik ten Hag‘s day. Despite a late equaliser from Harry Maguire, United walked away from Old Trafford with no points thanks to a last-gasp Alex Iwobi strike.
It was a depleting loss for United, gifting them their first defeat of 2024. The first-team squad just didn’t step up on the day.
Saying that, there were a few decent performers. But one Manchester United man stood out among the rest.

Harry Maguire a shining light for Manchester United
One player who showed his class against Marco Silva’s side had to be Harry Maguire. The English centre-half was definitely Manchester United’s star performer on the day.
He got the goal that gave United a bit of hope, but it was his defensive duties that were more impressive for fans. He had some tremendous stats on the day despite the defeat:
- 90 minutes played
- 1 goal
- 5 clearances
- 4/5 aerial duels won
- 104 touches
- 80/86 passes completed
- 93% passing accuracy
- 1 shot blocked

Harry Maguire let down by Manchester United
Maguire was not the man to blame for the defeat. Without Rasmus Hojlund, United severely lacked any sort of threat in attack – which ultimately meant opportunities and goals were scarce at Old Trafford.
But for most of the game, the Red Devils defended well – and Maguire was at the heart of that. Raphael Varane didn’t exactly paint himself in the best light, but the England international certainly proved he’s worth his weight in gold.
A tough defeat to take, but Maguire was definitely a positive amid a shocking result.
