Jonny Evans made his return to action for Manchester United in a pre-season win over Lyon.

It was like rolling back the clock. Jonny Evans wearing a Manchester United shirt again was an unexpected development, but he made it look so easy.

Evans began training with United to keep fit, as a free agent, before it was announced this week he has signed a short-term deal for the rest of pre-season.

With question marks over Harry Maguire‘s future, there may be a chance for Evans to earn a more substantial contract.

Jonny Evans plays 45 minutes v Lyon

Jonny Evans played the second half against Lyon, featuring at centre-back alongside Will Fish. His call-up came after youngster Rhys Bennett suffered an injury which will keep him off the US tour.

Evans, 35, may still have something to offer. He helped United to keep a clean sheet and win the game 1-0, with Donny van de Beek scoring the goal.

The Northern Irishman won headers, and was a threat from set pieces, and looked like he had never been away.

Many felt Evans should never have been sold by Manchester United in the first place, and the three-times Premier League winner helped his cause for a contract with his comeback display.

Erik ten Hag verdict

Manager Erik ten Hag was asked after the game if he got what he wanted out of Jonny Evans’ performance.

He responded: “Absolutely. You could see he’s a really fine character, he’s a personality, he’s a leader.

“He understands football so it’s nice to see him playing and he really contributes to the good performance of the team in the second half.”
