Manchester United went back to their roots with a spirited attacking display with three points the only thing missing in a good performance that ended in a 2-2 draw against Burnley.

Darren Fletcher’s side started encouragingly but were let down by a stroke of misfortune as a cross deflected off Ayden Heaven into the net.

Man Utd had the ball in the net next which was inexplicably ruled out for a soft foul to sum up a remarkable passage of bad luck.

Utd picked up from where they left off in the second half and were rewarded for their good play, with Sesko scoring courtesy of a beautiful pass from Fernandes.

He got his second soon after as Dorgu crossed from out wide, but another freak goal by Burnley evened things out as they hogged all the luck while Utd had none.

Fletcher threw the kitchen sink to regain the lead and United played like United should, but there wasn’t to be a winner despite a spirited display.

Man Utd player ratings vs Burnley

Senne Lammens – 6

Helpless with the deflected cross-turned-goal or the screamer for the second. Secure otherwise.

Diogo Dalot – 5

Caught napping for Burnley’s opener as they concentrated most of their attacks down his side.

Ayden Heaven – 6.5

The own goal went to his name through no fault of his own. Didn’t let it bring him down as he showed his quality on the ball.

Lisandro Martinez – 7

Tried to progress the ball forward with purpose and improved as the game went on.

Luke Shaw – 6

Struggled to balance overlaps with defensive duties as he returned to a full-back role. Still in LCB mode.

Casemiro – 5

Showed shades of his worst form under Erik ten Hag as he was booked and looked a step behind the game. Improved in the second half.

Manuel Ugarte – 8

Enjoying a quiet resurgence of late, which continued here as he drove forward with purpose while maintaining defensive discipline. If he continues like this, he will be Fletcher’s gift for the next man.

Matheus Cunha – 5

Isolated on the right. Tried to come inside and play as a 10, but that left spaces on the wing which Burnley exploited.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

The trademark flicks and audacious passes were back. United missed him sorely as he assisted Sesko’s goal.

Patrick Dorgu – 7

Asked to do more attacking than he’s capable of, but still almost managed to score and assisted Sesko’s second.

Benjamin Sesko – 8

Seemed like a conscious effort from his teammates to involve him more, and he had plenty of chances, two of which he converted in the second half.

Substitutes

Leny Yoro – 6

No glaring errors, no outstanding contribution. Just did his job.

Mason Mount – 6

Position on the wing didn’t suit him as he had a largely anonymous outing off the bench.

Joshua Zirkzee – 6

Some sharp passes but ultimately led to nothing.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Played like someone who came off an injury and hasn’t started a league game all season. But just playing is an upgrade for him. Will hope to build on it now.

Shea Lacey – 7

Almost wrote himself into history with a stinging shot that struck the post as soon as he came on. Showed energy and invention.
