Man Utd player ratings vs Rangers, Alejandro Garnacho’s statement game as 8/10 teammate gives Ruben Amorim headache

Manchester United continued their winning run in the Europa League, making the 2-1 win over Rangers their third in a row in Europe.

Ruben Amorim’s side responded to his plea and avoided conceding early as a comical decision to chalk off a United goal from a corner for a soft foul was the big highlight as Jack Butland ensured a goalless first half.

Butland’s fortunes made a U-turn in the second half as he punched into his goal off a corner this time, giving United a deserved lead.

Just when United looked like they were coasting, Maguire joined the individual errors list for this season after completely misjudging a header for Rangers to score a late equaliser.

United still reserved time for a late winner as Martinez crossed masterfully for Fernandes to bag United all three points in a thrilling finish.

Here’s how the players rated-

Altay Bayindir – 8

First-choice goalkeeper position looks there for the taking and he did his chances of claiming that no harm with some smart saves. Ruben Amorim has a headache for the Fulham game.

Leny Yoro – 6.5

Could have dovetailed better with Amad as the right-sided centre-back in possession but was secure defensively.

Matthijs de Ligt – 7

Should have been a goalscorer in the first half after heading in from Amad’s corner. Fans will hope his half-time sub was a precaution for an unforgiving fixture list.

Lisandro Martinez – 7.5

Made all the difference in injury time with his pinpoint cross for Fernandes. Aggressive in defense.

Amad – 7

Always trying to make something happen by buzzing about the field, with or without the ball. Threatening corner deliveries consistently.

Diogo Dalot – 6

Is doing a lot more overlapping in recent games but the final ball remains missing. Wasn’t needed much defensively.

Toby Collyer – 6.5

Called in to provide energy and running which he did but his limited on-ball repertoire gets exposed a bit when pressed heavily. Grew into it after a shaky start.

Christian Eriksen – 7

Selected as the “lockpicker” for Rangers’ deep block and tried some cute passes between the lines. Should have had an assist in the second half but Maguire missed a glorious chance.

Bruno Fernandes – 7.5

Looked like he was back to his old habits of trying the Hollywood pass too often, resulting in loss of possession before he made the quintessential Fernandes difference by bagging the late winner.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8

His most impactful performance in quite some time. Had the Rangers fullback on toast with his shifty dribbling and pace. Statement performance that deserved a goal.

Joshua Zirkzee – 6.5

Doing a better job holding up than Hojlund but never looks like scoring.

Substitutes

Harry Maguire – 5

Picked up from where De Ligt left off before a horrible misjudgment of an aerial ball allowed Rangers to score an unexpected late equaliser.

Tyrell Malacia – 6

Could ease into the game as United dominated territory and possession. Seamless appearance.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Amorim shored up the midfield late on in preparation for Fulham and he had a nice run-out against obliging opposition.

Manuel Ugarte – 6.5

Same as Mainoo. Almost scored but Butland made an impressive save.

Rasmus Hojlund – 6

Came on late but couldn’t continue his European heroics.
