Manchester United were swept aside by Tottenham on Sunday afternoon as they lost 3-0 at Old Trafford.

After an underwhelming start to the Premier League season, Sunday’s clash against Tottenham was a chance for Manchester United to get things back on track.

However, Tottenham derailed United’s season even more by inflicting a 3-0 defeat with goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevksi and Dominic Solanke.

United have now won just two of their opening six Premier League games and sit down in 11th in the Premier League table.

There is now huge pressure on Erik ten Hag, who got things terribly wrong despite having an almost fully-fit squad.

Manchester United’s midfield problem

Manuel Ugarte made his first Premier League start for the Red Devils and was named in a midfield three alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes.

That trio is deemed by many to be United’s long-term answer in midfield, but all it did was pose more questions.

United ended the game with a midfield of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount with Fernandes sent off and Mainoo leaving the game injured.

Casemiro was ridiculed for his disastrous performance in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool this season, and since then he has lost his starting spot.

But the issues in midfield are systemic and the blame must land on Ten Hag and his tactical set-up.

Manchester United fans on Casemiro vs Tottenham

After going down to 10 men following a red card to Fernandes, Ten Hag turned to Casemiro to shore up the defence.

Just moments later though, United conceded again with Dejan Kulusevski doubling Tottenham’s lead.

But United fans on social media were actually pleasantly surprised with Casemiro’s performance, with fans all making a clear point that he is not the issue in United’s midfield.

One supporter posted: “It’s not Casemiro’s fault. It’s a structural issue. The coach is not that good let’s be honest”.

Another added, “Like I said during that Liverpool game, Casemiro wasn’t the issue. The team IS NOT GOOD. Period. This is not a one player problem. Whoever can’t see it as this point is just clueless.”

A third fan said: “Casemiro is the only one who should go home with his head high! Class is permanent.”

Others were quick to point out that Casemiro was one of the brightest players after coming off the bench. “Casemiro has been our most attacking player,” one fan said, while another posted “Casemiro’s been on it since he came on”

There has been a lot of criticism towards Ten Hag after the defeat, but one fan praised his substitutions – “Mount and Casemiro brought in stability – Good subs brought on”.
