Manchester United were defeated 3-0 on Wednesday night against Newcastle, now Gary Neville has had his say on Erik ten Hag’s options.

Newcastle ran rampant on Manchester United with a 3-0 win, scoring three goals with little resistance to deny them. United were so poor and once again looked devoid of any gameplan or tactical awareness, as nothing really stuck.

The loss was number eight this season already in just 15 games and left serious questions needing to be answered by Erik ten Hag.

One man demanding a response both from the players and the manager was Gary Neville who slammed the United players for their moments of anger while commentating on Sky Sports.

“We saw this on Sunday, they’re 3-0 down at home and they lose their discipline, It’s not passion it’s petulance.”

Nevile didn’t stop there as he also suggested what needs to be done in response this coming weekend.

Gary Neville explains what Erik ten Hag must do

Speaking on commentary late in the second half, while United sat 3-0 down Gary Neville gave his verdict on what Ten Hag needs to do.

“He needs to do something stark on Saturday, he hasn’t really tried 5 at the back or anything different.”

Neville continued, “he needs to do something to shock the players to try and be a catalyst for the season.”

With such poor results and performances regardless of the personnel on the pitch, Neville could be right that a system change is needed.

What system could United change to?

As mentioned by Neville, something drastic needs to happen, otherwise Ten Hag will find himself on the receiving end of a sacking.

This is why a back five, if done right could be the way to go.

It wouldn’t be a traditional back five and would see perhaps Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabat or Casemiro options to slot into bring the ball out.

This could leave United reliant on Diogo Dalot and Sergio Reguilon to provide width, with Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund up top together.

It would be a huge change, but it would be needed, as whatever we are currently attempting clearly isn’t working.
