Manchester United lost more ground in their forlorn race for the top four with a meek 1-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park.

Anthony Gordon’s goal sealed all three points for Frank Lampard’s struggling side on a vital afternoon in the relegation battle.

United had control of the game until the goal, which uplifted the crowd and Ralf Rangnick’s side were unable to recover.

The second half drifted away from United, with chances in short supply, and cohesion and creativity lacking once again.

Gary Neville has been talking a lot about United’s future in recent weeks and he tweeted his instant reaction to the result at full-time.

Neville branded United a ‘joke’ and also praised Everton and his former England teammate Lampard for the way they recovered from losing to Burnley in midweek.

United’s top four hopes are surely over now, because there is just not the confidence and consistency in the side to get the results needed.

The season is fizzling out and it remains to be seen whether Rangnick will use that opportunity to blood some youngsters.

This was another under-par afternoon for the Red Devils and it is becoming a familiar tale during a campaign which is going from bad to worse.
