Manchester United edged to a 1-0 win over Fulham to secure a desperately needed three points.
Fulham had up to eight chances to prevent Manchester United’s winning goal from going in, Match of the Day counted when they broke the scrappy move down.
The final one was Bernd Leno’s weak attempt to save Bruno Fernandes‘ shot before it nestled in the corner.
On the other side of the ball, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was firm and strong to everything thrown at him.
Andre Onana praised
Rather than focus on his own side’s poor defending at the end, Fulham manager Marco Silva was more frustrated with their inability to take their chances.
Andre Onana was solid in goal, making two strong saves and commanding his box well, giving a feeling of assurance to his side as he recorded another clean sheet, his third of the season in the Premier League and fifth in all competitions.
Silva told Fulham’s website: “I think the chances we did create were enough for us to score. Good saves from Onana, that is true, but playing against Man United and creating what we did, we should have scored.”
Last week Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland had both singled out Onana for praise after the way he kept the score down in United’s derby defeat.
The Cameroon international has been in good form since the last international break and even produced a win-saving penalty in the Champions League against Copenhagen.
Clean sheets crucial for success
Manchester United are struggling to score goals right now, with only 12 in 11 Premier League games. It’s an awful figure.
It is crucial therefore that the team keep the score as low as possible at the other end. Each victory this season in the league has only arrived via a single goal.
Onana’s strong hands in goal gave confidence to his defenders, a switch from a shaky spell in September and early October. He is making improvements, and winning over supporters in the process too.
