Five things we learned from Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City

Erik ten Hag’s first home derby as Manchester United manager has finished in a 2-1 win against Manchester City.

Here is a look at five things we learned from the game…

Ten Hag springs surprises with his team

It might have been expected that Ten Hag would not persist with Luke Shaw at centre-half for tougher tests such as City and Arsenal, but he did.

Elsewhere, Fred came into the team instead of Antony, with Ten Hag going for a more robust midfield with Bruno Fernandes out wide.

Anthony Martial was fit to start through the middle, but only lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by Antony as United are forced to wait until Wednesday night for Wout Weghorst’s debut.

United miss first half chances to lead

City had more of the ball in the first half but United countered fairly effectively through Marcus Rashford, who had the best two chances of the first half.

He was unable to take either of them, and United went in at half-time level when they could well have been ahead.

Missed chances have been a constant theme for United lately, despite their good form and

Rashford plays through the pain

While Martial was forced off at the break, Rashford came out for the second half despite going down with a hip injury before the end of the first 45 minutes.

He was not able to offer the same level of threat between half-time and City’s goal, and it looked like he was carrying the impact of the hip issue.

It remains to be seen if the injury has a quick fix or if it is something which will keep Rashford out of contention at a time when he has been in the form of his life.

United lose momentum in the second half

It was hard to escape the feeling that City would come out better in the second half and United would need to do the same.

Pep Guardiola’s men came on strong after the break and United were pushed further back, more stretched and less able to counter.

Jack Grealish’s goal on the hour mark had been coming as United lost their way in the game and were increasingly unable to keep Kevin de Bruyne quiet.

United turn the game from nowhere

Minutes before United equalised, Rashford got the crowd going with some intense pressing but that was pretty much all the fans had had to feed off in the second half.

But out of nothing, United were level when Bruno Fernandes burst forward from deep to score a goal which was initially disallowed before being awarded by VAR.

Then, Rashford kept his scoring form going after superb work on the break by Alejandro Garnacho to send Old Trafford wild.
