Bruno Fernandes reacts to United fans signing 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' v Brighton

Manchester United fans chanted ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at their players in the 4-0 defeat against Brighton.

United fans always travel in numbers and always make noise. They did that when the team was winning trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson and they have in the years since.

There is not often dissent but as a nightmare season lurched towards another low at the Amex Stadium, the fans made their feelings known.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Bruno Fernandes was asked about the chants and admitted that his own performance and the display of the team was not good enough for the club.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’

When asked about the song, Bruno said: “I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man United shirt and I accept it.

“The result is what it is. It is not good enough. They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result. A little bit of everything [went wrong]. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now.

“It’s something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better. I don’t want to talk about the future, we have still one game this season and we have to win.

“I talked with the club about the future many times before I signed my contract because I think the future can be good, but obviously many things need to be fixed, as we have seen this season.”

‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’

Bruno has fronted up after another bad performance and he does deserve a small amount of credit for that.

But there have been bad performances aplenty this season and players have fronted up after most of them, but nothing has improved after.

That has been the theme of the season and that is how we have reached the point where the fans are chanting that the players are not fit to wear the United jersey.

It remains to be seen what the atmosphere will be like at Crystal Palace in two weeks time, and it may well depend on the character of the performance.
