Brighton 2-1 Manchester United highlights and reaction as Pedro scores winner after Amad leveller

Key points

Manchester United have suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 2-1 to Brighton in just their second match of the season.

Erik ten Hag’s side got off to a winning start last Friday but came up against much tougher and more clinical opponents in Brighton.

Manchester United started the brighter of the two teams but failed to take their chances before Danny Welbeck tapped in the opener against his former club.

Amad had missed a great chance earlier but made amends by grabbing the leveller as he cut inside and saw a shot deflected into the net.

United were buoyed by the goal and thought they had the winner when Alejandro Garnacho finished off a fine counter. However, Joshua Zirkzee kneed the ball in from an off-side position on the line and it was ruled out.

With both teams looking for a winner, it was Brighton who found it deep into added time when Joao Pedro capitalised on more poor defending to nod in the ball.

Full-time: Brighton 2-1 Manchester United

An entertaining game ends in a familiar defeat for United as shoddy defending and poor finishing cost them.

Danny Welbeck scored the opener before Amad levelled things up. Alejandro Garnacho had a goal disallowed after Joshua Zirkzee was off-side as it went in but Brighton got the winner on the 95th minute through Joao Pedro.

90′ 2-1 – Goal. Pedro

Brighton have won it at the death through Joao Pedro. The striker is left completely unmarked at the back post and gets down low to head the ball in.

Enciso has an effort from 20 yards and it goes a whisker over the bar with Onana worried.

90′ 1-1 -Antony immediately involved

Antony immediately brings the ball down with a fine touch and advances down the right. His pull back sets up a McTominay shot that is blocked before Casemiro has a tame effort that is gathered. Seven minutes added.

88′ 1-1 – Martinez not happy

Martinez takes two knocks from Van Hecke and the Argentine is ready to make his displeasure known before the referee steps in and books the Brighton man.

Rutter, Adingra and Ayari are on for Brighton as Antony replaces Amad.

86′ 1-1 – Good defending from Dalot

Dalot, with help from Martinez, do well to stop Minteh from going through on goal after a quick one-two.

81′ 1-1 – Onana has a nervy one

Onana makes a strong challenge on Minteh and gets the ball but it was a risky one after United had played themselves into trouble.

77′ 1-1 Frantic stuff

Pedro goes close with an effort, United try to counter and end up getting countered themselves. Mainoo gets booked for illegally ending the move.

De Ligt and McTominay – in what could be his final game – are on for Maguire and, surprisingly, Fernandes while Enciso replaces Welbeck.

70′ 1-1 – Garnacho goal disallowed

United thought they had the lead after Garnacho finished off a fantastic counter attack but Zirkzee kneed it in on the line from an off-side position. Gutting!

60′ 1-1 – GOAAAAAL! AMAD!

United are level! Amad is played in down the right, cuts inside and his effort takes a wicked deflection off Van Hecke to level things up.

United needed that as they were struggling for inspiration and Welbeck had just hit the bar.

52′ 1-0 – Dalot off the line!

Brighton cut through United with a fantastic move which sees Milner through on goal, he toes it past Onana but Dalot slides in to clear it off the line. A big let-off for United.

HT: Zirkzee on

Zirkzee replaces Mount. Hopefully, it’s not an injury but he was quite good in the first half.

HT: Zirkzee may be coming on

Zirkzee is getting run through the tactics after warming up during the break. He might be about to come on as the players return to the field.

HT: 1-0 – United behind at the break

United started well but once again didn’t take their chances, with Amad failing to get a great opportunity even on target. Unlike against Fulham, they are against a clinical side who do take their chances and Danny Welbeck pounced to put Brighton ahead with their first real chance.

United are still in it but you feel Zirkzee and Garnacho will be on soon.

40′ 0-0 – Rashford is down

Rashford is down after catching a knock but looks okay. United are getting the ball in decent areas but are struggling to create clear cut chances.

33′ 1-0 – Rashford goal disallowed

United think they have an instant response as Rashford scores a rebound after his header is incredibly saved by Steele but it’s correctly flagged for offside.

32′ 1-0 – Goal. Welbeck

United are behind as Welbeck scores against his old club again. Pedro’s cross, which Maguire doesn’t deal with, goes across to Mitoma and Welbeck is then left unmarked to tap in the cross for his 100th goal.

30′ 0-0 – Poor from Amad

Amad has had a good half but he makes the mess of a promising 3-on-2 counter with his pass to Rashford slow and behind the forward. It’s been a promising 30 minutes for United, though, who have looked solid and had some good passing interchanges.

27′ 0-0 – Dalot bends one just wide

United keep the pressure on Brighton after the corner, ending with Dalot making some space on the edge of the box and having an effort. His bending shot is wide of the post.

A good period for United but they need to take their chances while they’re on top.

26′ 0-0 – Mount looking sharp

Mount has had some nice moves on the ball and has just been involved in a lovely move with Fernandes that has won a corner.

23′ 0-0 – Casemiro heads over

This time it’s Amad to delivery a fantastic cross, from the resulting free-kick, and Casemiro meets it but heads over the bar.

22′ 0-0 – Veltman escapes an obvious booking

Veltman deliberately handles the ball after falling on the pitch, taking it away from Fernandes, but somehow isn’t shown a yellow card for it.

19′ 0-0 – A zippy pitch

The lashing down rain has given the pitch a lot of extra zip and we’re seeing a lot of overhit passes as a result.

17′ 0-0 – Both teams looking good

United have gotten forward well a couple of times, with Rashford, Mount and Mainoo all showing some nice touches. Brighton, meanwhile, remain dangerous with Minteh’s pace on the right proving a problem. Casemiro has just made a well-timed tackle on him in the box.

11′ 0-0 – Great chance for Amad

Dalot gets away down the left and delivers an inch-perfect cross for Amad but the winger can’t keep his volley down.

10′ 0-0 – Brighton have first sight of goal

Brighton win the ball back in a dangerous place and move it nicely towards goal. Pedro gets a shot away from distance but he drags it well wide.

6′ 0-0 – Good pressing from Amad

Brighton attempt to play out but Amad is on Dunk like a limpet and wins a corner from his good pressing. The corner is cleared.

2′ 0-0 – Confident United start

United have kept the ball quite well in the opening stages, with Martinez, Casemiro and Onana doing well to pass it around the back.

It’s good to see them trying to keep hold of the ball but you get the sense they’ll get caught out if they give it away.

Ten Hag on Sancho

Speaking to TNT Sports, Ten Hag was asked if Sancho will leave in the remaining days of the window. He said: “He’s here, but I had a choice to make.

“We had some issues; we need a full squad. He’s one of them and needs to compete for his position.

“We need in the squad every position double because it’s going to be a long season.”

Sancho isn’t involved in the squad for today’s game but he has made the trip to Brighton. He was spotted in the background of Lisandro Martinez’s interview on TNT Sports.

Unchanged team

Erik ten Hag has decided to name an unchanged side to the one that defeated Fulham. There have been calls for Garnacho and Zirkzee to start but it must be a relief for the manager to actually name the same starting XI twice in a row. That couldn’t have happened much with all the injuries last season.

A tougher test for Utd today

United managed to get off to a winning start against Fulham but it was a narrow victory that could have gone the other way.

Though Ten Hag’s side played some nice football going forward, they remained easy to play through in midfield and easily caught out.

That was against Fulham. Brighton are a much better side with faster, more skilful and clinical forwards. It will be a much more difficult game and a real indicator of where United are at.
