Anthony Elanga stats v Brighton: Seven passes in 45 minutes as United lose 4-0

Anthony Elanga was substituted at half-time during Manchester United’s shocking 4-0 loss against Brighton and the stats do not make good reading.

Elanga has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Old Trafford but has been overplayed in truth, thanks to a combination of a lack of alternatives and Ralf Rangnick’s loyalty.

The German’s patience lasted 45 minutes at the Amex Stadium, where United went in at the break 1-0 down after an abject first half display.

Rangnick threw on Edinson Cavani and Fred in place of Elanga and Nemanja Matic but it quickly got far worse for United, who were 4-0 down before the hour mark.

Elanga stats v Brighton

As per WhoScored, Elanga made just 7 passes against Brighton with a 14.3 per cent success rate in the 45 minutes he played before he was substituted.

That underlines the way that United were unable to get him into the match and also how he could not get himself into the game.

But it also shows how wasteful he was when he got the ball, not making sure he finds a red shirt when he got it in a game where United were really struggling from the off.

We named Elanga among the four worst players in a red shirt today, although it should be said that all 11 could realistically have made that list.

Elanga has had some real highs this season but also some lows and it cannot be a good team for a young player to be learning his trade in at the moment.

He will likely be part of Erik ten Hag’s revolution but the truth is we do not know how good he is or can be yet.

He has offered energy and enthusiasm on the whole during a season where plenty of others have not and it is to be hoped that ten Hag can mould him into a top young forward.

But he has to show more than this and he has to come back stronger next season. The whole team was off it here, but the stats look worst for Elanga v Brighton.
