Manchester United supporters were not sold on a key decision that Ruben Amorim made with Amad Diallo in the pre-season friendly match with Fiorentina on Saturday.

The Red Devils were in action at Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim’s men played their final match of the pre-season tour ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Fiorentina took the lead against Manchester United in the opening 10 minutes after Simon Sohm buried the ball past Altay Bayindir from an Albert Gudmundsson corner.

However, United fought back in the first half against Fiorentina and the Red Devils found an equaliser after Robin Gosens turned the ball into the back of his own net.

Amad Diallo played the full 90 minutes at Old Trafford and the Ivorian attacker later converted a spot-kick in United’s 5-4 penalty shootout win over Fiorentina.

What Man Utd fans said about Amad Diallo after the penalty shootout win over Fiorentina at Old Trafford

Amad Diallo was deployed as the right wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for Manchester United in Saturday’s pre-season encounter against Fiorentina.

The 23-year-old Ivory Coast international linked up with Bryan Mbeumo on the right flank before he switched positions in the second half and played in attack.

United fans took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and had mixed feelings about Amad playing as a wing-back instead of a No 10 role.

“I am unconvinced that this Amad at WB [right wing-back] experiment will work,” one Red Devils supporter suggested.

“It’s early doors, but I don’t think I like Amad at RWB,” another United fan argued.

While a third tweeted: “Yo, chat, I’m [not] the only one that think[s] Amad is more dangerous as a winger than RWB, we limit him when he plays at RWB.”

Someone else posted: “Can’t lie, Amad is being wasted at wing-back, man, so unfortunate.”

“Amad will have to battle for that [No] 10 with the others,” a fifth X user added.

“Still early, but [I] haven’t been impressed by the Amad-Mbuemo dynamic.”

“Amad [is] much, much better in the final third,” another claimed.

Somebody else commented: “Amad seems better suited as a [No] 10 rather than [as] a RWB.”

Ruben Amorim faces a real challenge with finding the perfect role for Amad Diallo in Man Utd’s set-up after the Fiorentina result

Amad linked up with United signing Bryan Mbeumo on the right flank and the position as a wing-back is something he played in under Ruben Amorim last season.

But it did feel that the wing-back’s influence against Fiorentina was not as potent as it could have been had Amad been deployed in one of the two No 10 roles.

Amorim is likely to pick Mbeumo for his right-sided No 10 position after the former Brentford attacker’s big-money move to Old Trafford in the summer window.

However, that leaves the 40-year-old United manager with the big question over whether to play Amad as a right wing-back or alternate him with Mbeumo.

It is still early days for Amad, but with the new Premier League season around the corner, all eyes will be on whether Amorim commits to the current position change.
