Manchester United have confirmed reports the Glazers are now considering selling the club.
An official statement was released by the club including quotes from Joel and Avram Glazer.
The Glazer comments read: “As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the Board has authorized a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives.
“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.”
Sale option included
While the word ‘sale’ is not included in the Glazer quotes, it is in the statement put out by the club.
The statement reads: “The board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company.”
Manchester United fans can’t quite celebrate yet but it feels like the news supporters have been longing for is close.
The club have appointed The Raine Group to oversee the process, who facilitated the sale of Chelsea earlier this year, ESPN report.
The Glazers took over the club back in 2005 amid protests from supporters, which have never gone away.
This is the first sign they are looking to relinquish control, and this looks like it could be the start of their eventual exit from the club.
When they do depart the club it will be a case of good riddance. They were unwanted from the very start, have never been accepted, and now is the time for supporters to ramp up the pressure and make very clear that they need to leave.
Now is not the time to get complacent. We are close – just not quite close enough yet.
