Manchester United fans unimpressed by Lingard's message

Over the past couple of days, Manchester United’s players have come forward and attempted to apologise for recent performances.

To his credit, Paul Pogba fronted up with an interview with Sky Sports, acknowledging the 4-0 defeat to Everton was unacceptable.

Juan Mata spoke of his determination to put the situation right, via his weekly blog.

David de Gea sent messages on social media explaining his feelings, explaining: “Difficult to put what I am feeling today into words. As captain, I want to say that the performance of the team today, on top of the result, was not up to the standard expected when you pull on this shirt. We know that we have to improve but words mean little: we have to give everything for this club. Thank you for your unconditional support.”

It seemed heartfelt enough. As De Gea recognises, actions will speak louder than words.

Jesse Lingard’s message yesterday struck the wrong tone.

He simply posted a picture of him clutching the badge, intending to show that he cares about the shirt.

The problem is that Lingard has been one of United’s worst performers of late.

His last goal or assist came back in January and fans deserve better than the dross he has been serving up.

The reaction to his message was entirely predictable. Lingard needs to step up now, on the pitch, and not give weak messages containing only emojis off it.

The responses were unforgiving, showing Lingard the time for talking and cheap messages is over.

Fans will not be fooled by social media posts. There are legitimate concerns over his quality and place in United’s XI after his recent dismal run.

It’s time for him to deliver, or his messages will mean nothing.
