Manchester United have announced that Anthony Elanga has signed a new long term contract with the club.

Elanga is regarded as one of the top talents in United’s youth system.

He shone in pre-season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before injury struck and has played two of Ralf Rangnick’s games in charge so far.

It is hard to make the jump from the academy from the first team but the evidence from this and last season suggests Elanga is capable.

This contract news is great from United’s perspective. It keeps him at Old Trafford until 2026 with the option to extend until 2027.

Elanga can play on either wing or as a striker in Rangnick’s 4-2-2-2 system. The German has a reputation for developing young talent and will relish working with Elanga.

He has seven goals in seven games for Sweden’s Under-21 side this season, which shows he is capable of hitting the back of the net when he gets a chance.

With uncertainty around the futures of Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial, perhaps Elanga will jump up the striking pecking order between now and the end of the season.

That said, there is a chance he could be allowed to leave on loan in January to get him playing regularly every week and see how he does under that pressure.

News of the contract extension went down well with United supporters…
