Rio Ferdinand blasts 'stupid' question over Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United future

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has proven this season he is still a force to be reckoned with, set to end the campaign as the club’s top goalscorer.

Former United teammate Rio Ferdinand has hit out at suggestions Erik ten Hag may not want to keep Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ralf Rangnick was asked after the Chelsea game if he would be recommending new boss Erik ten Hag keeps Ronaldo, to which he distanced himself and said the new boss will make all the decisions.

Ferdinand has told Five it is a no-brainer that Ten Hag will want to keep Ronaldo at Old Trafford for 2022/23 at least.

With Ronaldo being United’s top scorer by a long distance, Ferdinand said the question was not a smart one to ask.

Ferdinand said: “I just think from a journalist’s point of view, to even ask that question, I think it’s stupid, you’re not looking at whats been going on during the season, you’ve got curtains in front of your eyeballs, because if Cristiano doesn’t play this year, Man United are 15th, 16th in the league probably, maybe lower.

“It’s not a question of do you think the manager will keep him, it’s how do you think he’ll deploy him, how do you integrate him into the team and in his squad. That’s the question. it isn’t will he stay or will he go, that’s stupid.

“When you’ve got a world class operator on and off the pitch, you utilise that to the best of your abilities, it’s a dream scenario. I would be absolutely shocked to the hilt if Ten Hag comes in and says, ‘I can’t work with Cristiano Ronaldo’.”

Ronaldo has ended the season in strong form, after a slow start to 2022, and has demonstrated a remarkable ability for a player who is 37.

United’s results have obviously been hugely underwhelming, and to that, nobody should really be automatically safe next season.

Erik ten Hag will come in with his own plans, but previous indications suggest he will utilise him, having talked up his professionalism in an earlier interview.

Marco van Basten has also urged Ten Hag to build his side around Ronaldo. United require a couple of additional forward players next season, and fitting them in around Ronaldo will be essential. And then there is the question over what he actually wants for himself.
