The two pre-season friendlies against the Spanish sides are our last matches before our Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on 7 August.

The 37-year-old only returned to Carrington on Tuesday after missing all of United’s pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia with ‘family reasons’ cited for this prolonged absence.

United’s number seven underwent medical tests and trained yesterday before watching his team-mates beat National League side Wrexham 4-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly match at Carrington.

The report from the Mail states: “It was thought this weekend’s double-header of friendlies against Atletico Madrid on Saturday in Olso and Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday may come too soon.

“But it’s believed Ronaldo may have an eye on the Rayo Vallecano one, which will feature more of a second string side.”

With Ten Hag likely to pick his strongest squad for the clash against Diego Simeone’s side, Ronaldo could form part of a youthful side that features against Vallecano.

With uncertainty continuing to surround his future and with him lacking match fitness, Ronaldo’s return to the United side isn’t likely to be immediate.

And with Anthony Martial impressing during pre-season, there isn’t a pressing and urgent need to rush back the five-time Ballon d’Or back into the starting line-up.

But with Ronaldo reaffirming his desire to play Champions League football next season and United reaffirming he isn’t for sale, the stand off between the Red Devils and Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes continues.

But if he does feature against Vallecano on Sunday that could be considered a positive sign.

Although he did start last season with Juventus before making his return to the Theatre of Dreams in late August.
