Iker Casillas backs Cristiano Ronaldo to win Golden Boot at 2022 World Cup

Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas has backed Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo to the win the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While his performances on the pitch this season have been below par, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner decided to deliver the truth he promised back in August a week before the World Cup started.

Snippets of the 37-year-old’s two-part interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV went viral hours after Erik ten Hag’s side had beaten Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage thanks to a dramatic last-gasp winner from Argentinian wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho.

But after missing United’s last two games before the World Cup break due to illness, United’s number seven tainted his legacy by claiming he’s been “betrayed” by the club and that he has no respect for Ten Hag.

As so often has been the case since Ronaldo returned to Carrington on the eve of the new season, the former Juventus marksman has left a trail of destruction and carnage in his wake due to his selfish actions.

While a lot of the talk before the biggest sporting tournament on the planet has been about Ronaldo, it’s not been due to his influential performances on the pitch.

But despite being out of form and heading into what looks like his last World Cup, his former Real Madrid teammate Casillas has backed him to deliver on the biggest stage once again.

When asked by MARCA who he thinks will win the Golden Boot, Casillas admits it’s difficult to choose but he backs Ronaldo who he played alongside 228 times for Los Blancos.

The 2010 World Cup winner said: “It’s very difficult. Let’s see what’s going on. There’s Neymar. Messi. And Cristiano! It seems that Cristiano came to the World Cup by invitation and people do not count on him, for everything that happened at Manchester United, but…”

Casillas bets on Portugal’s captain: “I count on him. When they talk about Cris, people forget what he did. Well, they don’t forget, because they know what he did. But I always wanted him on my team. Cristiano still has the ability to play at the highest level.”
