The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future has been a constant topic that Ten Hag has had to contend with since taking the reins at Old Trafford.

United’s number seven didn’t form part of the club’s pre-season tour with ‘family reasons’ cited as the reason for his absence.

The Portuguese national captain made his return in the final pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano where he played for 45 minutes and after being replaced at half-time was pictured leaving Old Trafford before the game had finished.

The former Ajax manager has insisted throughout the summer that Ronaldo, who was United’s top scorer last season with 24 goals across all competitions, was not for sale.

But having returned to the fold and being part of the team that lost both of Manchester United’s two opening Premier League games for the fist time since 1921, the Dutchman is now reportedly willing to sanction Ronaldo’s exit.

The MEN reports: “It is understood United manager Erik ten Hag has privately been receptive to selling Ronaldo for weeks but Glazer has so far resisted any proactive attempts to sell the Portuguese.

“Sources believe there is now a concerted effort to accelerate Ronaldo’s departure amid United’s disastrous start to the new season.”

As much as a club legend Ronaldo is, it does seem pointless keeping an unhappy player who doesn’t represent the future of Manchester United.

While it was only pre-season, the camp did seem happier without the former Juventus man dominating the headlines.

But despite him being one of the all-time greats, the biggest stumbling block could well be a Champions League contender coming forward and signing him.

The likes of Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Napoli, Paris Saint Germain, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Real Madrid have all opted against pursuing the phenomenon despite Mendes’ best efforts.

Beyond a controversial move to Atletico Madrid it’s hard to see where Ronaldo’s exit route comes from.

Ronaldo’s return to United wasn’t officially confirmed until 31 August last year and with 16 days of the summer transfer window remaining, Fabrizio Romano is predicting one of the biggest summer sagas could go right down to the wire.

The uncertainty and distraction of Ronaldo is clearly taking its tole on Ten Hag, but with Avram Glazer standing his ground due to the superstar status our number seven brings, the 52-year-old is no closer to reaching the outcome he seemingly desires.
