Cristiano Ronaldo finally ended his scoring drought to get his 2022/23 season and running.

The Manchester United number 7 scored a first half penalty to double the team’s lead after Jadon Sancho had opened the scoring.

A penalty wasn’t the most exciting way for Ronaldo to break his duck, but he’ll take it. This could be the confidence booster he needs.

Getting off the scoresheet before the international break will help Ronaldo to settle, after a difficult summer due to speculation over his future after he missed the club’s pre-season tour.

Ronaldo sends message to Manchester United fans

Cristiano Ronaldo posted on social media after Manchester United’s victory. He was pleased to net his 143rd goal for the club.

This was also his 699th club career goal, one away from an impressive milestone.

Erik ten Hag spoke to the club website after the game and spoke positively about Ronaldo.

The manager says he can see Ronaldo is recovering his fitness and getting sharper, and he is pleased with his focus.

He said: “We could expect this when you miss pre-season so he has to work really hard and invest to get the right fitness then he will score more goals.

“You can see he is really close when he gets fitter he will finish them. I think [he is] totally committed to this project and totally committed to this team, totally involved.

“You see also connections coming around him and he is constructing connections so I am happy with that.”
