Cristiano Ronaldo sends message after Portugal win to secure World Cup 2022 place

Portugal have qualified for the 2022 World Cup after a World Cup play-off final win over North Macedonia.

The win was not easy, with North Macedonia high in confidence after a shock win over Italy.

Home advantage helped the Portuguese, and so did having two top Manchester United stars, who helped secure an important 2-0 victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo helped break the deadlock with a pass to Bruno Fernandes, who scored one of the most important goals in his career to put Portugal 1-0 up, before adding another after half-time to make it 2-0.

The win is a huge weight off the United duo’s shoulders, anxiety they have both been bearing since being sent into the play-off mix last November.

After wins against Turkey and North Macedonia, managing to avoid an eliminated Italy, Portugal are through and have sealed their spot in Qatar.

The Manchester United duo are understandably delighted, and looked thrilled on the pitch at the Dragao as the players celebrated.

Ronaldo sent a message out on Instagram after the win expressing his huge satisfaction and relief at getting the win.

He wrote: “Goal achieved, we’re at the Qatar World Cup, we’re in our rightful place! Thank you to all the Portuguese for the tireless support! Power Portugal!”

Ronaldo had told RTP in the lead-up to the fixture, ‘it’s the game of our lives’, which showed how seriously he was taking it. He was desperate to be at Qatar, missing out would have been a humiliation considering his standing in the game.

The tournament will be Fernandes’ first World Cup, along with Diogo Dalot, and it is always good for United to have as many representatives as possible at the finals.

Amid a tough club season, its a relief for the United stars to get through, and enjoy a moment of happiness.
