Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson with a short message after Manchester United’s draw vs Newcastle United.

Prior to yesterday’s goalless draw against the Magpies at Old Trafford, Sir Alex awarded the 37-year-old a silver plate in recognition for scoring 700 goals in club football.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner reached the landmark after coming off the bench to score the winner against Everton at Goodison Park last Sunday.

With Anthony Martial out injured and Marcus Rashford not fit enough to start against the Toon Army, Erik ten Hag handed United’s number seven his first Premier League start since mid-August.

Prior to yesterday’s stalemate against Eddie Howe’s ever improving Newcastle side, Ronaldo’s only start in the top-flight came when we beaten 4-0 by Brentford in Ten Hag’s second Premier League game.

With 20 minutes remaining against Newcastle yesterday, and with his side chasing a winner, Ten Hag decided to bring the former Juventus man off in place of Rashford.

Portugal’s national team captain was not best pleased when he saw his number come up on the substitution board and he was seen muttering under his breath as he took his place on the bench.

Rashford missed a great chance to seal the points in the dying seconds when Casemiro delivered an inch perfect outside of the boot cross onto the England international’s head, but our number ten’s header went agonisingly wide.

Ronaldo would have likely been looking on thinking he would have gobbled up the chance if he had been in that position.

Ten Hag revealed that Ronaldo was replaced by Rashford because he wants to keep his forward line fresh.

After yesterday’s Premier League encounter, Ronaldo took to Twitter to pay tribute to the legendary Sir Alex.
