Chelsea are interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo as a free agent if Manchester United sack him, according to The Mirror.

Following the 37-year-old’s damming two-part interview on TalkTV with Piers Morgan, the Red Devils are exploring the possibility of terminating the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contract.

The Athletic report: ‘United have started a legal process against Ronaldo for breach of contract, though the club must go through a set of procedures before potentially sacking the Portugal international.’

After launching a scathing attack on his current employers and revealing he doesn’t respect manager Erik ten Hag, Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford is coming to an end.

Sky Sports report United want Ronaldo’s exit done “cleanly and quickly” and in as dignified a way as possible.

Having instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to orchestrate a summer move to a Champions League club in the summer, a move to Stamford Bridge was touted as a potential option for United’s number seven.

But despite Chelsea owner Todd Boehly meeting with Mendes, former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel wasn’t interested in bringing United’s number seven to west London.

But with Graham Potter now at the helm and with it looking increasingly likely that Ronaldo is going to be available as a free agent, Chelsea’s stance on signing Ronaldo may have changed according to The Mirror.

In an ideal world, Ten Hag and United wouldn’t want Ronaldo to stay in the Premier League, but the twenty-time league champions would be powerless when having a say in the Portuguese superstar’s next move, if he is sacked.

Following his emotional £12.8m move back to Old Trafford from Juventus last August, Portugal’s captain, who turns 38 in February, was United’s top scorer with 24 goals across all competitions.

But Ronaldo and Ten Hag have come to blows ever since the five-time Champions League winner returned to Carrington after missing the club’s pre-season tour due to “personal reasons”.

From leaving Old Trafford early during the pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano to refusing to come on against Tottenham Hotspur – the interview with Piers Morgan looks to have burnt too many bridges.

But depending on whether Chelsea do step up their reported interest in Ronaldo if he does in fact become a free agent following his sacking, one of the game’s greatest players of all time could return to the Theatre of Dreams later in the campaign.
